I took these at the reception. We had a great time. Their ceremony and reception were unlike any wedding I have attended. The bride, groom, and all the guests were giving glory to God and praising Him the whole time. The Lord and what He has done in their lives was the focal point of the day. We were totally blessed to be invited to Derek & Allison Forbes wedding in California. Michael arrived in California earlier that week to attend the Calvary Chapel Missions Conference and fellowship with the Oki crew. The kids and I flew out on Thursday to join him. Maddie spent the first two days of the trip with her friend Maddy who used to live in Virginia. These are some of the pictures from Derek's wedding. It was such an awesome family reunion- a preview of heaven!

On Friday morning we took a drive to Huntington Beach. The weather was beautiful- very sunny and a bit of a breeze. We enjoyed watching the volleyball players and the surfers. We were finally able to take a drive to Connecticut to see my family and meet Miss Cheyenne in person. We invited Maddie's friend, Megan, to join us. It was very nice to see everyone (especially those we had not seen in a while) and eat my mom's delicious food! I hope it's not too long before we go back.

Earlier this fall Maddie was blessed to take part in the Beloved purity series taught by the youth leaders at our church. The class was for girls only. On Sundays mothers and daughters would learn together what it means to be loved (beloved!) by God, how to show Him our love, and how to reflect that inside and out. On Wednesday evenings the girls had private small groups where they listened to testimonies of godly women on their struggles and victories in the areas of personal purity. They also had time to share and pray with one another.

At the end of the series the girls were encouraged to make a public commitment to purity. The sanctuary was transformed into a beautiful setting for the girls and their guests. Each girl also received a CD with great music. My favorite song is "Beloved" by Tenth Avenue North. I highly encourage you to check it out on Itunes or youtube. Thanks so much to all the ladies who put this together.

They are praying about a purity series for the young men this year. They already have a group called "Seekers" that meets every few months to share, pray, and seek His will for them.

For the last two years Michael and I have had the pleasure of attending the annual Service Source dinner. Service Source works alongside the U.S. government and others by providing employment and training to disabled adults. The people are very hardworking and they are proud to work for the government. Fred has been my dinner partner for the past two years and it has been wonderful getting to know him ( he loves baseball too!). He works on the corpsman bags that they use in combat.

Believe it or not, one Saturday afternoon in September we had nothing planned. That's unusual for our family. For the life of me I can't remember why Tyler didn't accompany us this day. The Lord blessed us with perfect weather and the dogs cooperated all day. Great Falls has a "Virginia" side and a "Maryland" side. Just another one of the cool places you can see when you visit us!

In July 2008, Michael's parents came for a short visit. They made the 13-hour drive from Florida (thanks Mom & Dad)! The top photos are from Luray Caverns, the largest caverns on the East Coast. They were discovered in 1878. On the drive to Luray Caverns we took a detour to drive through Shenandoah National Park. The scenery was beautiful. God's creation is so amazing!

We were blessed once again by Anheuser Busch's Operation Hero Salute. For the past few years they have given away a one-day pass for free admission to active duty military families to enjoy their theme parks. Summer 2007 we went to Busch Gardens Williamsburg with the Kilgore and Averell families. This year we went to Busch Gardens in Tampa while we also visited Michael's parents.

Creation Fest '08

This past June Michael and Tyler attended Creation Fest Northeast '08 with the CC Fredericksburg Senior High Youth Group. They camped for four days on a farm in Agape, PA. It's a festival with worship and speakers. Churches from all over the Northeast area join together to praise God and have lots of fun. Michael's favorite performer was Chris Tomlin. Tyler's favorite was probably Family Force Five. They both said that Switchfoot totally blew them away and they were pleasantly surprised! These are the tulips Maddie and I planted last fall. Maddie painted the vase at a church event for the junior and senior high girls. Recently I had the privilege of hanging out with Maddie and her friends in downtown Fredericksburg. First stop was the library's teen art exhibit. There are some very talented teens in this area! We checked out some of the cool shops and then had a picnic lunch in Hurkamp Park. Hurkamp Park has a farmers market everyday except Sunday. On Tuesdays when the weather is nice they have concerts during lunchtime. Later we watched "A Little Princess"- it was a good movie that made me cry. I guess I'm still young at heart...

Michael's Trip to Atlanta/CNN Field Trip

Bonnie Schneider is a Meteorologist at CNN. That's the only part of that station that doesn't favor "The Left".
My Sister -in -Law and my Sister -in- Christ, Anna Banana Velez.
She took me around where she works at CNN International. It was awesome hanging out with her. Can't wait till they visit us soon...hint hint
Just some of the tornado damage we saw, I was in town for a big MonaVie meeting and they had to move the entire conference venue and 600 rooms in under three weeks. There were over 4000 people at the conference and it went off without a hitch... It was Awesome. . . . . . . .

Casting Day-Part Two

Here is a picture of Maddie's X-Ray. She has an S-curved spine. Michael says she's as crooked as a politician. The next photo is her on the table where they pulled traction to get her spine as straight as possible before wrapping her in plaster. She was very brave and did not complain at all! The last photo shows the cast room techs holding her cast/mold which they will use to custom-fit her brace. The guys were so nice. Of course we took her out to lunch later that day. She started wearing her brace on April 1st. She will probably have to wear it for two years. She wears it 23 hours a day-only taking a break to shower and stretch. Praise God we have free medical care and Michael is usually able to take time off for her appointments.

OK, so once again the date-stamp on my camera is wrong. These were taken on March 14th at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in D.C. For those of you who didn't know (including us) Maddie has scoliosis. She will have to wear a brace until she finishes growing to keep her spine from worsening. She has a great attitude about the whole thing. These were taken on the day she got her cast/mold made so they could custom make her brace.

Awesome Date Night

We were super blessed by some friends :) with last-minute concert tickets. We made arrangements for the kids and attended the concert at George Mason University's Patriot Center. We also got "meet and greet" passes to meet Matthew West, Jeremy Camp and TobyMac. Our seats were so close-on the floor! Needless to say we went home with sore throats that night. At the end of the evening we ran into some sisters from CC Fredericksburg. We also got autographs for Maddie and a t-shirt for Tyler. Thank you to our very generous friends!

We were blessed to have Karisa Kilgore stay with us during Spring Break. Many of you will remember her as our next door neighbor in Okinawa. We've known Karisa and her family since 1998 and have been stationed together three times! They are a great family and live only a short drive away.

We went to Chinatown, D.C. on a Sunday afternoon. There wasn't much to do unless you want to eat Chinese, which we didn't feel like eating. The "Friendship Arch" is beautiful. Next, Maddie and Karisa Kilgore pose for us. I loved the way this little building in the last two pictures stood out. The only other eventful things were going to the Urban Outfitters store and walking by the Verizon Center. Urban Outfitters has clothing, shoes, home decor, hip people who work there and unfortunately (and much to our surprise) lots of items with profanity. Not cool :(
There was a Pistons/Wizards game (that's NBA for those of you who don't know basketball) at the Verizon Center and we had a few scalpers try and sell us tickets!

The Torres family stopped by for a visit on March 16th-17th. Mona's family was flying in from Okinawa and Dulles Airport was where they landed (45 mins. from our house). Larry rented a 12 (?!) passenger van to transport everyone back to North Carolina. Sorry not everyone is pictured; we were busy hanging out. The last picture makes me laugh~Mona's aunt and mom were cold even though it was 65F outside (warm for March) and so they made themselves comfy on the floor with the sunlight on their backs while they played with Maria. All the ladies, including Jun's mom had lunch while Larry, Jun and the boys slept or stayed upstairs. The fellowship was great and it was so nice to hear the beautiful Japanese language again. We hope to see them when we next visit North Carolina.

My girlfriend Jana Dingmore tagged me with a "meme" (rhymes with dream). I must confess I didn't know what a "meme" was so I did an MSN search. You can go to thedailymeme.com for the definition. Jana and her husband Jerry knew me back in my "B.C." days. Jerry was our pastor when we came to know Christ (2000). Jana was very patient with me while I struggled with coming to Christ. Along the way, we cried and laughed at my craziness. We've kept in touch since we left Texas and saw them recently at their home in Macon. I will post pics from our visit later.

Here goes: The book nearest me when I read this email is "15 Minute Devotions for Couples" by Bob & Emilie Barnes.

This excerpt was taken from a devotional titled "Love is Caring" and told the story of Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller. It speaks of the love exhibited by Anne and how Helen (and all of us) were blessed by Anne's challenge in teaching Helen and her perseverance in following through.

Has God challenged you lately through His Word? Has one of your brothers and sisters in Christ shared something that inspired or convicted you? Now that you have the information/inspiration, what will you do with it?

I've been challenged with Ephesians 3:20, "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us..." Sometimes when I pray I ask God for such little things that limit Him to this tiny box. Instead of praying, "God help us to get along today." I should pray, "God supernatually bless our marriage and by Your power use it to bless someone else." "God, help my child to get a good report card." or instead, "Father, I pray Colossians 3:23-24 for my child. Give them success that will glorify You and have eternal reward." Ask Him. If it's in His will, He can do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think!

By the way, I'm really glad the book nearest me wasn't a cheesy romance novel!

Meet my friend, Shirley "R2" Artunduaga. We served in the Marine Corps together in Okinawa way back in the day! The last time we saw each other was February 1990. There were many tears at Naha Airport that day. We have kept in touch over the years but this was my first trip to California. We were blessed to have a short visit with her and her family. Alright I figured how to read directions and now we are going to try to make more postings on this Blog....We have moved from Okinawa Japan where we served at Calvary Chapel Okinawa. A family we will never forget or lose contact with....The Lord use so many people around us to teach us so many different lessons.
